Today, 15 September, Lieutenant Denis Sheahan and Gunner Seán O’Mahony came from Collins’ Barracks to visit our school.  This marks the start of the 1916 Centenary celebrations in Rathpeacon which will continue until Easter 2016.

We gathered in the hall for a special assembly.  Lieutenant Sheahan spoke to us about the Irish flag and what it means.  He also told us about the correct protocols for raising and lowering our national flag.  The school was presented with a new flag.

Lieutenant Sheahan asked us about the events of 1916.  Lieutenant Sheahan read the Proclamation with the help of Conor from Sixth Class.  He then presented the school with a copy of the Proclamation of Independance.  This will be put on display in the school.

You will hear more about our school celebrations for 1916 closer to Easter.  For more information on the national celebrations click here.
