For the past two years in Rathpeacon, we have been working very hard to earn our fifth green flag for Bio-Diversity. Our campaign is culminating with a special themed “Green Day” next Thursday – 15 March. Loads of photographs of the occasion are in a special slide show below, make sure you have a look!
The meaning of ‘Biodiversity’ is easy to understand if you ‘declunk’ the word – “bio” refers to ‘living things’ and “diversity” means just that, a range or variety. So, bio-diversity means the huge variety of life that surrounds us on planet earth. Maintaining a high level of diversity among plants, animals and the living things all around us is essential in keeping the environment healthy and fit for human life. This includes diversity within species, between species and diversity of ecosystems. For more information on the bio-diversity green flag, click here.
