Proclamation Day

We had a wonderful day on Tuesday, 15th February, when we celebrated Proclamation Day. Our celebrations began in the school hall.  The entire school gathered together along with some parents and guests.  Mrs O’Neill greeted everybody and spoke about the importance of this occasion and celebrating the centenary of the 1916 Rising.

Then Third Class performed a play based on the events of the 1916  Rising.  They gave an absolutely wonderful performance.  The other classes added some musical accompaniments to the play.  First and Second Classes performed on their tin whistles, while all of the other classes sang Irish songs and ballads.  Mr O’Donoghue also performed the song “Children of ’16.”  The performances from everyone brought history to life and made the occasion a very special one.

Our celebrations then moved outside as we followed a piper to the front of the school.  Children from Sixth Class raised the flag.  Then we read the Proclamation of 1916.  Afterwards, children from Fifth Class read a New Proclamation for 2016.  The celebrations came to an end with some Irish dancing and a rousing rendition of Amhrán na bhFiann.
